Toronto makes an appearance in The Weeknd’s brand new video for “Snowchild,” a track from his album After Hours.
Created by Tokyo’s D’ART Shtajio – the first major Black-owned anime studio in Japan – the video begins with a few snowy streetscapes of the singer’s birthplace.
As he sings: “Walking in the snow before I ever made my wrist freeze,” an iconic Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcar rolls past City Hall. (The model of streetcar depicted in the video was retired by the TTC in December 1995, two months before The Weeknd’s sixth birthday.)
The video chronicles the various personas The Weeknd’s has adopted for each of his albums.
The Weeknd co-wrote the song with fellow Canadians Illangelo (aka Carlo Montagnese) and DaHeala (aka Jason Quenneville).
It’s the second time this year fans have seen an animated version of the singer. In May, he played himself in an episode of American Dad. Later this month, he lends his voice to an episode of Robot Chicken.
