Shawn Mendes put his spin on a song that is twice as old as he is during Tuesday night’s TIFF Tribute Awards special on CTV.
The 22-year-old Canadian singer covered Stevie Wonder’s 1976 track “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” during the show.
Wearing an open denim shirt over a black T-shirt, Mendes sang beautifully while playing piano. He took part in the special to mark the launch of the Shawn Mendes Foundation Changemaker Award, a $10,000 prize for a film at the Toronto International Film Festival that “tackles issues of social change,” according to a release.
Mendes’ eponymous foundation will also contribute to TIFF Next Wave, which supports young filmmakers.
“It's important now more than ever that we lift up the powerful voices of creatives who are helping inspire change,” Mendes said, in a release.
Wonder debuted “Love’s In Need Of Love Today” on his album Songs In The Key of Life. It has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, including George Michael and Canada’s Nikki Yanofsky.
