Shawn Mendes said Monday he didn’t mean to “like” a transphobic tweet.
“Must of accidentally liked it scrolling down a feed,” he replied to a fan who told him to “unlike the tweet and apologize.”
Mendes added: “You know me & I’d never. Sorry.”
It’s not clear what tweet the singer “liked” but fans are backing Mendes. “It actually means more than you know that you unliked and apologized,” one wrote. “Shows you genuinely care and didn’t mean it.”

Mendes has, in fact, been outspoken in his support for his songwriting partner Teddy Geiger, who talked about transitioning in 2017.
“There was a moment when, I remember, I referred to Teddy as ‘she’ without thinking – and it takes time to be able to learn that, obviously – and the way she looked at me was [with] this intense amount of joy,” Mendes said last year.
“And I swear if everybody in the world experienced one of their best friends, you know, experiencing that, there would be no questions. People would not be questioning it. It’s just not worth it to question it.”
In November, Geiger got engaged to Canadian actress Emily Hampshire.
