Shawn Mendes is no longer a teen pop star.
The Canadian singer is celebrating his 20th birthday today – possibly with tequila.
“I drink either Don Julio or Casamigos,” Mendes told Rolling Stone in an interview published in June.
“I love rye and ginger. But I had to slow down because they don’t feel good the next morning, so I just started drinking tequila, and it’s better."
Mendes is now only one year away from being able to legally drink in America.
“I drink a s**t-ton when I go home, and I just don’t drink in America. I get it all out when I go home,” he said.
Mendes told Rolling Stone having to wait until he’s 21 to drink in the U.S. is frustrating. (He'll be in the U.S. on a three-day break from his new tour when he turns 21 next year.)
“I’m being denied a social experience, not an alcoholic beverage,” he explained. “I wish I was allowed to just go in the bar and drink a pop because then I would at least be there with everyone and I wouldn't have to be in my hotel while everyone else is at the bar.”

Mendes’ first album, Handwritten, was released in April 2015, when the Ontario native was only 16, but he made his red carpet debut at what is now the iHeartRadio MMVAs when he was only 15. (Mendes is back this year as a performer and the night’s top nominee.)

Fans have witnessed Mendes’ journey through adolescence, which is well documented in photos and on video.
In June, The Late Late Show host James Corden showed a compilation of clips in which Mendes’ voice cracked.
“I did not approve this,” the singer said, although he couldn’t help laughing at the reminders of going through puberty.
Of course, part of becoming a man is sprouting body hair – and Mendes has publicly joked about his increasing amount of chest hair.
As for hair elsewhere, Mendes admitted in a radio interview last November that he manscapes.
“Yeah, absolutely,” he said. “It would be weird if I said no. Or if I said I don't want to answer that.”

It’s hard to believe what Mendes has accomplished in his teen years: Three studio albums that have debuted at No. 1, several successful global tours, 55 awards, and at least five tattoos.
He even graduated from high school – but only “because my teachers are angels sent from above and they helped me through it.”
Happy Birthday, Shawn!
