Demi Lovato appears to give nods to people and events from her life in the video for her new single “I Love Me.”
The pop star, who suffered a near-fatal drug overdose in 2018, is seen touching the hand of a young woman on a gurney as she walks past an ambulance (at the 3:00 mark). At 2:08, she strolls past a trio of dark-haired guys in fancy suits meant to represent the Jonas Brothers.
Near the end of the video (at 3:05), Lovato watches a bride and groom run past her – which some fans believe is a reference to her ex Wilmer Valderama’s engagement this year to Amanda Pacheco.
“I’m a black belt when I’m beating up on myself / But I’m an expert at giving love to somebody else,” Lovato sings in the anthem for self-love.
“Oh, why do I compare myself to everyone / And I always got my finger on the self destruct / I wonder when ‘I love me’ is enough?”
On Thursday’s episode of Ellen, Lovato explained “I Love Me" isn’t necessarily representative of the others on her next album.
“This song is fun and lighthearted and it’s got a positive upbeat message,” she said. “There are songs on the album that are ugly honest and heavy and will make you cry and will take you there.”
