FLAMES HAVE A CHANCE AT THE NUMBER 1 PICK IN THE 2020 NHL DRAFT!
Hard to imagine that the Calgary Flames still have a chance of scoring the first overall pick in this years draft!
WHAT? HOW? At the 2020 NHL draft the top 8 picks failed to score the number 1 pick overall and instead it went to a placeholder team.
A place holder team will be a team that loses in the first round of the Covid style playoffs this year. In total there will be 8 teams that will lose in the first round and all will have a 12.5 % chance of getting the first overall pick when 'phase 2' of the NHL draft happens, likely in August.
This is crazy, the odds of getting the first overall pick was only 2.5 percent for a placeholder team. The Senators got burned, with 2 picks in the top 8 lottery they ended up with 3rd and 5th.
Again, losers of the opening playoff series will all have an equal chance at the #1 overall pick.
Flames, Jets, Canucks, Leafs, Canadians and Oilers are all included! (also included is my other fave team the NY Islanders)
So as much as I want to beat the Jets in the first round; losing just gives the Flames a shot at winning the first overall pick....its just losing to the Jets would suck, and i'd take a Stanley Cup this year.
Now we wait to hear when and if the 24 team 2- hub city goes forward. Training camp is expected to start after July 10th.
