Eddie Money, who shared the news last month that he had stage 4 esophageal cancer, died Friday. He was 70.
“The Money Family regrets to announce that Eddie passed away peacefully early this morning,” read a statement. “It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our loving husband and father. We cannot imagine our world without him. We are grateful that he will live on forever through his music.”
Money announced in August that his cancer had spread to his liver and lymph nodes. He said the diagnosis hit him “really, really hard.”
The singer, whose real name is Edward Mahoney, released a dozen studio albums since 1977 and is known for hits like "Take Me Home Tonight," “Two Tickets to Paradise,” “Baby Hold On” and “Walk on Water.”
In July, he cancelled the remainder of his 2019 concerts, including one in Grand Forks, B.C., due to pneumonia contracted while recovering in hospital from a heart valve procedure. Two months earlier, he told fans he was having the surgery after complaining about shortness of breath.
“I look forward to getting back win stage and rockin’ with you all,” he said in a statement at the time.
Canadian singer Sass Jordan remembered Money as "a wild and wooly character, a man who’s blood ran thick with the sap of his native New York roots, full of wicked humour and passion." She tweeted: "I had the great good fortune to open many shows for him in the ‘90’s - what a voice! He will be greatly missed."
Fans and music stars are paying tribute to Money on social media.
#EddieMoney Such a sweetheart. Saw him in January at our benefit for the Malibu fires/Borderline shooting victims and hadn’t seen him in years. He gave me a big hug and immediately, while still hugging me, whispered a dirty joke in my ear. “So this guy’s wife...” RIP, pal. ❤️
