In a rare interview, The Weeknd has opened up – as much as The Weeknd will – about the songs on his 2018 EP My Dear Melancholy, which fans assumed were about the singer’s relationships with Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez.
“The reason why it was so short is like, I think I just had nothing else to say on this . . . whatever . . . . It was just like this cathartic piece of art,” The Weeknd told Esquire. “And yeah, it was short, because that’s all I had to say on this situation.”
Writing and recording the songs made him feel better. “I mean, that would have sucked if I didn’t,” he said.
But, when asked who the EP was about, The Weeknd replied: “No comment.”
The 30-year-old Toronto native was almost as evasive when asked if he has ever experienced racism.
“I probably have, you know? I probably have for sure,” he said. “But I try to focus on making it about the music and trying to succeed.”
With his tour postponed due to COVID-19, the 30-year-old singer told Esquire he and his Doberman named Caesar have mostly been in the L.A. penthouse he bought last year. The Weeknd said he has been writing and recording new music by himself and for other artists, playing video games, watching movies and working on a pair of screenplays.
