Artists from all genres of music left us in 2017.
While it was sad to say goodbye to icons like Chuck Berry and Fats Domino, it was particularly painful to process the deaths of talents like Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell.
Here is a look back at some of the artists who died in 2017 but will live on forever thanks to the music they gave us:
Gregg Allman
The founding member of the Allman Brothers Band died on May 27 at 69.
Walter Becker
The Steely Dan co-founder and guitarist succumbed to cancer on Sept. 3. He was 67.
Chester Bennington
The lead singer of Linkin Park committed suicide on July 20. He was only 41.
Chuck Berry
One of the pioneers of rock ’n’ roll, Berry died at age 90 on March 18.
Patrick Bourgeois
The frontman of ‘90s Quebec band Les BB died on Nov. 26 after a battle with cancer. He was 54.
Glen Campbell
After a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the country icon died on Aug. 8. He was 81.
David Cassidy
The one-time teen idol died on Nov. 21 of liver failure. He was 67.
Chris Cornell
Frontman for Soundgarden and Audioslave, Cornell took his own life on May 18. He was 52.
Fats Domino
The blues singer and pianist whose hits included “Blueberry Hill” died on Oct. 24 at 89.
Gord Downie
The Tragically Hip frontman lost his battle with brain cancer on Oct. 17. He was 53.
J. Geils
The J Geils Band frontman and guitarist died at 71 on April 11.
Troy Gentry
One-half of country duo Montgomery Gentry, he died in a helicopter crash on Sept. 8 at 50.
Al Jarreau
The Grammy-winning jazz singer died on Feb. 12 at 76.
Kim Jong-hyun
The K-pop superstar was only 27 when he took his own life on Dec. 18.
Tex Lecor
The Quebec singer-songwriter died on Sept. 9 at 84.
Frank Levin
The former keyboardist for Ottawa '80s band Eight Seconds died in his sleep at the end of November at home in China. He was in his mid-50s.
Tommy Page
The former pop star behind “I’ll Be Your Everything” died on March 4 of an apparent suicide. He was 46.
Lil Peep
A rising star, rapper-singer Lil Peep (real name Gustav Åhr) died on Nov. 15 of a drug overdose. He was 21.
Tom Petty
The singer died suddenly of cardiac arrest on Oct. 2 at 66.
Prodigy
Born Albert Johnson, the Mobb Deep rapper was only 42 when he accidentally choked to death on an egg on June 20.
Ronald Prokop
Known as Skip, the founder of Canadian band Lighthouse died on Aug. 30 at 74.
Eloie Richard
The East Coast-based indie Canadian musician died on June 19 following surgery. He was 44.
Kenny Shields
Lead singer of Canadian rock band Streetheart, Shields died on July 21. He was 69.
Joni Sledge
The “We Are Family” singer, part of Sister Sledge, died at 60 on March 10.
Mel Tillis
The country star died on Nov. 19 at 85.
Butch Trucks
The drummer and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band died at age 69 on Jan. 24.
Don Williams
The country singer known as "The Gentle Giant" died on Sept. 8 after a short illness. He was 78.
Christopher Wong Won
Known as Fresh Kid Ice, Wong Won was a founding member of 2 Live Crew. He died on July 13 at the age of 53.
Malcolm Young
The AC/DC guitarist died on Nov. 18 after a long battle with cancer and a heart problem. He was 64.
