British comedian Jimmy Carr is taking shots at some beloved Canadian music stars at Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival.
“It wouldn’t be right to talk about Montreal and not talk about the most famous couple to ever come out of this city: Céline Dion and René [Angélil],” Carr said Wednesday, the first night of The Nasty Show.
“Obviously when they got together people didn’t think the relationship was going to last because she was only 14 and he was a pedophile.”
Wait, there’s more.
“But, the relationship did last, until just last year when René’s heart did not go on.”
Carr, a festival favourite, got a mixture of groans, laughs and applause during his set.
In one joke, he managed to take shots at both Montreal's beloved hockey team and one of the world's top-selling rock bands.
“Last time I was in Montreal, someone invited me to go see the Montreal Canadiens. I said, ‘If I wanted to go to an arena and watch six Canadian losers with mullets, I’d go and see Nickelback.’”
No one was safe from Carr's barbs, including pop star Justin Bieber.
The Nasty Show, which runs until July 29 at Metropolis, features Carr as well as Godfrey, Robert Kelly, Big Jay Oakerson and Yamaneika Saunders. It’s hosted by Ari Shaffir.
