Justin Bieber came home to Canada last week and stirred up a debate about the lids on Tim Hortons coffee cups.
The pop star took to Instagram to ask his 123 million followers: “Who’s Canadian and misses these lids at Tim Hortons like I do” along with a photo of the chain’s former flat lid with the snap-back tab.
Bieber captioned his poll: “I know they could leak but it was easier to drink out of.. the coffe (sic) would come out better.. these new lids are uncomfortable on the mouth, and you get very little liquid each drink it's a damn outrage and needs to be changed back.”
He also called for Tim Hortons to be more environmentally conscious. "Tbh it shouldn't be plastic find a way to be recyclable let's change the world 1 lid at a time.”
Tim Hortons quickly double-doubled down in defence of its new lids. “Sorry you aren’t loving our new lids,” read a tweet from the official Tim Hortons account, “but the good news is that they’re made with 100% recyclable plastic.”
Bieber responded: “We're making a a change one lid at a time.”
Earlier this year, Tim Hortons president Alex Macedo told The Canadian Press that the new lids were “rigorously tested” to ensure they would leak less.
Bieber later revealed in an Instagram Story that he got a stack of the old lids while in Toronto to attend a Maple Leafs game.
He later posted a photo of a Tim Hortons cup with the tab lid and captioned it: “This is where it's at.”
Only months ago, Bieber’s fellow Canadian singer Shawn Mendes was featured on limited-edition Tim Hortons cups. They quickly sold out but hundreds can currently be found on sites like eBay. The paper cups are selling for as much as $9 while the travel mugs are offered for up to $183 for a pair.
