Katy Perry has revealed that her delicious single “Bon Appetit” is about female empowerment.
The song sparked some debate after the video debuted because it shows the singer being prepared for cooking by a group of male chefs.
Appearing on an Australian radio show, Perry said the song is actually a message about fighting back against patriarchal oppression.
“It’s like ‘oh you just think you have me all figured out’ and also we aren’t just pieces of meat. You just want to use me, dispose of me, the parts that you want,” she explained.
“I’m sorry, I’m in control this time.”

Then again, Perry said, fans don’t have to take the song too seriously.
“It’s not my job to preach at a person or tell them what they should think,” the pop star added.
“It’s nice, though, if I can pose a question or broaden a perspective — I just have to reflect sometimes on what’s going on in the world a little bit, but also make some escapism music.”
