Liam Payne is once again promoting his debut solo release by reflecting on his days in One Direction.

“There were parts of it that were a bit s**t, like there is with anything,” he told The Guardian, “and there were parts of it that was just euphoria.”

Payne, 26, said near the end, he was “slowly losing the plot.”

The singer recalled how One Direction’s management relied on him to be the responsible one in the group and keep the others – Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik – in line.

“I was like, that’s great, innit – because then everyone in the band thinks I’m a d**k,” Payne recalled. Fans sort of did, too. “When you’re at the stadium, and if you get the least screams, it’s like: ‘For f**k’s sake.’”

Payne admitted he went through dark times both during his One Direction days and after. “It’s a bit dark but yeah, it was very touch and go at times.”

Payne’s first solo album, LP1, is out Dec. 6.
