Win Butler of Canada’s Arcade Fire spoke out last week about U.S. president Donald Trump’s sudden declaration that transgender people are not welcome in the military.
"I would just like to briefly say that trans people are not disturbances,” the singer told a crowd at a show in Brooklyn.
“Usually a bully starts with someone who he thinks is weak, but it's the f***ing wrong call.”
Butler’s comments came a day after Trump tweeted that transgender people cause “tremendous medical costs and disruption.” Thousands of transgender people currently serve in the U.S. military.
“I wish this whole f***ing thing was a joke,” Butler said. “We have a lot of work to do, collectively. We’re really open to any way we can help, maybe we can figure it out together, because this f***ing s**t is really bad. We have to find a way to change it.”
Arcade Fire then performed the song “We Exist.”
Other artists who have spoken out about the ban include Lady Gaga, Rita Ora, The Chainsmokers and Sia.
