19-year-old Haroon Ali-Syed was sentenced to life in prison after plotting to detonate a bomb at an Elton John concert in London last year. He was arrested on Sept. 18, 2016, after MI5 and Scotland Yard worked together to foil his plans for the attack.
Ali-Syed had been seeking loans totaling £8,000 to fund the attack, but later decided on a nail bomb when he couldn’t secure any loans, according to U.K. newspaper The Independent. The Elton John concert was rescheduled for three days later.
The would-be attacker’s life sentence equates to serving 16 and a half years at the very least, though he could be eligible for parole after that.
“This case is another example of the severity of the current threat from terrorism, which we cannot tackle alone,” said Metropolitan Police Commander Dean Haydon in a statement.
“I urge communities to continue to support the police by reporting anything they feel is suspicious. Even if you think it is insignificant, please report it, and our specialist officers will decide the best course of action.”
